We, the girl scouts of troop 35 located in Honolulu, HI just recently finished our Gold Award Project. A Gold Award Project is the highest, most prestigious project a Girl Scout could go through, and the last one we do before we graduate as Girl Scouts. For a Gold Award Project, you need to find a local issue that is affecting your community and try to do your part in helping to eliminate or help the problem.
We saw that homelessness in Hawaii was a growing issue and it affected many people. It's beginning to get out of hand so we wanted to do our part in helping to resolve this growing problem. Alisha, a member of our troop, is familiar with a program called Family Promise, an organization that works with homeless families in transition. Being in transition means that these families do have jobs, they just don't have enough saved to pay rent monthly. So Family Promise gives them a place to stay until they get back on their feet. They stay overnight in a church facility and are fed breakfast and dinner.
Alisha's church had other volunteers willing to familiarize us and help us get involved with this program. For our Gold Award project, we decided to cook dinner for the families for two nights, and also providing them with entertainment for the evening.
Our Gold Award Project was a success, and the families seemed to enjoy themselves, taking a break from their stressful lives. Even though there are programs like Family Promise, homelessness is still a huge issue in Hawaii as well as around the world.
